A rich array of tools to study and mitigate coastal threats

Located north of Boston on the shoreline of Nahant, Massachusetts, the Coastal Sustainability Institute is uniquely suited to the firsthand study of coastal ecosystems. Our researchers study marine systems in a modern research center and have access to an extensive repository of ocean-species DNA. They collaborate with partners worldwide, including the University of Havana in Cuba, to advance the understanding of coastal habitats.

The premier research arm of CSI is the Marine Science Center, a 27,000-square-foot hub of research and learning. The center's many resources—including well-equipped labs, a flow-through seawater facility, experimental tank farms, greenhouse, dive center, classrooms, and shoreline access—enable faculty, students, and research collaborators to make transformative discoveries.

Also located at CSI's home in Nahant is the Ocean Genome Legacy, a repository of DNA from more than 20,000 marine species worldwide. OGL is dedicated to the study and preservation of the threatened biodiversity of the sea. It offers researchers around the world unmatched access to genomic materials—serving as a catalyst for breakthroughs to protect coastal ecosystems and improve the human condition.
